Stock valuation estimates an ownership claim from assumptions about future cash flow, earnings or assets. Separate price from estimated value, enterprise value from equity value, and total equity from per-share value. Choose a suitable method, expose forecast and terminal assumptions, reconcile net debt and diluted shares, and test what a dated price requires. The output is a revisable range, not a trading instruction.

Price is observable at a particular time; value is a model estimate. A quote alone cannot prove that a company is cheap or expensive. Identify the economic claim, currency, valuation date, information then available, and assumptions connecting current evidence to future results. Calling an estimate “intrinsic value” does not remove uncertainty in cash flows, discount rates or terminal conditions.

Debt minus cash is a starting convention, not a universal subtotal. State whether leases, pension deficits, restricted cash, investments, preferred claims or minority interests are included. Keep the bridge and forecast consistent; otherwise the same obligation can be counted twice.

A multiple asks how a comparable market or transaction prices a defined earnings stream. P/E belongs to equity earnings; EV/EBITDA relates an enterprise claim to a pre-interest measure. Leverage, tax, leases, capitalization, cycles, business mix and one-time items can break comparability. A multiple hides a forecast rather than eliminating it.

An asset approach asks what identifiable resources may be worth after relevant obligations. It can help when assets are separable or liquidation and replacement matter. A DCF has an explicit forecast and a terminal value. The forecast should last until temporary capacity, pricing or margin conditions approach a defensible state; it is not automatically five years. Terminal value represents later cash flows and is often most of enterprise value, making the model chiefly a claim about mature economics.

Growth usually needs reinvestment. Raising terminal growth while leaving cash conversion, incremental returns and reinvestment unchanged may be inconsistent. The algebra can work while the business assumption fails.

- Translate the implied requirement into volume, price, margin, reinvestment and returns.
- Test whether refinancing or dilution changes the claim before year 5.
- Label every input observed, calculated or assumed; model output is not filing fact.
- Record the valuation date because debt, cash use, grants or price can change the per-share bridge.

A margin of safety is the gap between a conservative estimate and a dated price. At CU14.02 estimated value and CU12.00 illustrative price, the discount is (CU14.02 − CU12.00) ÷ CU14.02 = 14.4%. The label does not make the estimate safe: omitted claims, dilution or an implausible terminal state can erase it. Preserve the assumptions behind the denominator.

Stop refining decimals when a business assumption is the largest uncertainty. If a defensible terminal change matters more than correcting a minor input, research that driver. Precision should follow evidence.
