How should returns reduction be measured?应如何衡量退货减少?
Predefine one eligible order-item or shipped-unit cohort, one physical-return event, one denominator, one observation window and one as-of date. Prefer randomized assignment where feasible. Preserve assignment and actual exposure separately, wait until both groups have equal return opportunity, and report group counts, mature rates, absolute percentage-point effect, relative effect, uncertainty and missingness. Keep cancellations, refunds, exchanges and replacements separate. Review conversion, net sales, contribution, support, complaints, safety, accessibility and operational capacity before a stop, revise, expand or scale decision.

Relative effect (%) = (treatment rate − control rate) ÷ control rate × 100. A negative value indicates fewer observed returns under treatment. Always show the two base rates and counts. Add an uncertainty interval and practical decision threshold; do not turn a point estimate into a guaranteed future result.

A synthetic randomized test assigns 24,000 eligible shipped units. After an equal return window, control has 12,040 units and 1,084 physical returns; treatment has 11,960 units and 957. Assignment is the primary denominator and exposure delivery is reported separately. The numbers illustrate arithmetic only.

The observed absolute effect is 8.00% − 9.00% = −1.00 percentage point, and the relative effect is −1.00 ÷ 9.00 = −11.1%. The team still needs the prespecified interval estimate, practical threshold, exposure-quality checks and all guardrails. This synthetic result is not a benchmark or product claim.

Separate causal evidence from observational movement区分因果证据与观察变化
Randomized assignment can balance measured and unmeasured pre-treatment factors in expectation, but execution still matters. Check sample ratio, contamination, non-delivery, cohort maturity and missing outcomes. A before/after comparison remains vulnerable to seasonality, product mix, policy, promotion and channel changes. Label it observational, adjust only with defensible pre-treatment variables, run sensitivity checks and avoid causal wording.
