Do not compress the case into one “damaged” flag. A customer report, delivered-package photo, carrier exception, warehouse inspection, and laboratory package test answer different questions. Their agreement strengthens a hypothesis; disagreement identifies a gap rather than a record to overwrite.

A synthetic fragile-item cohort has 10,000 mature fulfilled units and 180 damage-reported returns. Warehouse inspection covers 150 of them and observes qualifying product damage in 90. Among observed cases, 60 use package V1 on route group R, while only 15 comparable cases use package V2 on the same route; the remaining 15 are distributed elsewhere.

The package-route combination is a useful investigation target, but raw counts do not control its shipment volume, product mix, destination, season, or inspection selection. Compare verified damage per eligible shipment for V1 and V2 within route R, inspect pre-ship evidence, then run an appropriate package test and controlled field rollout.

The first time damage is observed sets a bound, not necessarily the occurrence moment. An intact outer carton does not rule out shock or internal product weakness; a crushed return carton does not prove damage occurred on the reverse trip. Preserve uncertainty and evaluate explanations that fit the physical pattern and event timeline.
