What is cost per return?什么是单次退货成本?

Cost per return is the total cost included under a declared boundary divided by the number of qualifying return cases in the same period and population. State whether the denominator counts returned orders, authorizations, parcels, or units. Use the median and percentiles beside the mean when case costs are uneven.

Define both the cost and the return case同时定义成本与退货案例

The same dataset can produce very different unit costs. One returned order may contain three units, use two parcels, and create one authorization plus several warehouse receipts. Choose the case unit that matches the operational decision, keep alternative denominators as separate metrics, and never compare them without relabeling.

Match the numerator and denominator exactly让分子与分母完全匹配

Cost per return = Included return costs for the cohort ÷ Qualifying closed return cases in the cohort

Use closed cases when late invoices, warehouse work, and disposition materially affect the numerator. If current open cases are included, report their share and expected missing cost separately. A returned-order denominator answers customer/order economics; a returned-unit denominator answers product handling economics.

Publish “mean $16; median $11; five closed cases; operating-cost boundary; synthetic data.” The mean is useful for budget totals, while the median describes a typical case in this small example. Investigate case E rather than treating $16 as the cost of every return.

Use the mean for totals and the distribution for operations总量使用平均数,运营使用分布

Cost per return is a ratio, not a diagnosis. A change can come from a new cost, a new case mix, missing late invoices, a different closure rule, or a denominator shift. Pair the ratio with total cost, return volume, component mix, coverage, maturity, and customer outcome before concluding performance changed.
