An economic moat is a durability hypothesis: a mechanism resists imitation or substitution and allows returns above the capital required to operate and grow. Sources may include cost advantage, switching costs, network or data effects, intangible rights, and efficient scale in a market too limited for rational duplication. No label is sufficient. The mechanism must benefit customers, capture part of that value, support profitable reinvestment, and persist through competitive responses. Brand awareness, one high-margin year, industry growth, regulation, or market leadership can exist without a moat. Use a moat clock for possible duration and an erosion ledger for events that would shorten it.

The source is not the moat; the causal chain is. Certification may open the door, data improve accuracy, workflow integration make replacement risky, and a small market deter a second database. Break any link and protection can disappear. Industry growth is different: it can lift an undifferentiated supplier while inviting competition.

Here, NOPAT = operating profit × (1 − assumed 25% cash tax rate). Average invested capital is operating capital funded by equity and interest-bearing finance, excluding excess cash under the stated rule. Thus NOPAT is 13 × 75% = 9.75 and ROIC is 9.75 ÷ 39 = 25.0%. Against an assumed 10% required return, the spread is 15 percentage points. Tax, capital definition, and required return are assumptions; ROIC is calculated; durability is judgment.

Duration and runway are separate. SignalVault may defend its database for a decade yet exhaust attractive expansion after two corridors, or have many weakly protected modules. Open standards attack switching cost; broader recognition attacks institutional scarcity; self-build attacks revenue, data accumulation, and efficient scale simultaneously. The last scenario is therefore more than customer concentration. It removes a contributor to the alleged data loop. A defensible conclusion is conditional: “Evidence supports several reinforcing mechanisms today, but customer-controlled data and regulatory recognition create two concentrated erosion paths.” It is not “SignalVault has a wide moat.”
