“Customers are sticky” skips the mechanism. A testable version is: “eleven embedded interfaces and two years of history make replacement disruptive, so renewal remains high after expiry despite a credible substitute.” It fails if customers dual-home, export cheaply, renew only because of penalties, or leave when standard connectors appear.

Mechanisms may coexist, but one observation cannot be double-counted. High renewal after price can reflect value, switching, contract timing, or weak alternatives. Treat it as outcome evidence, then seek migration records for switching, node-driven usage for network effects, and matched unit costs for scale.

This is compatible with better price and delivery cost, but classification, capitalization, hosting mix, understaffing, or customer mix could move margin. Anchor Port adopted TideGrid; similar Breakwater Port did not. Median coordination delay moved from 6.0 to 3.8 hours at Anchor and from 5.8 to 5.2 hours at Breakwater. The simple difference-in-differences is (3.8 − 6.0) − (5.2 − 5.8) = −1.6 hours. That association is consistent with an effect beyond the shared trend, but only if the ports would otherwise have followed parallel paths—an unverified assumption.
