Collect the Four Inputs Before Calculating计算前收集四项输入

Write the metric year first. Without it, “impact factor” is incomplete because the citation year and publication window move together. For a hypothetical 2026 JIF, the citation year is 2026 and the publication cohort is 2024–2025. Do not use citations accumulated across all years, citations recorded on today's date, or papers from a different window.

It does not ask how many citations those items have received over their lifetimes. It also does not mean only citations to the document types represented in the denominator. Clarivate explains that the JIF numerator is designed to aggregate citations to the journal under its matching rules, while article-level metadata errors or incomplete links can affect what is connected.

The five-year JIF uses the same ratio logic with a wider publication window. For year Y, divide citations in Y to eligible journal items published in Y−1 through Y−5 by eligible scholarly items published across those five years.

A wider window may be informative in fields where citations accumulate slowly, but it is not inherently “better.” Compare the two-year and five-year values only when they come from the same journal identity and stated metric year. Do not compare one journal's five-year value with another journal's two-year value as though they were the same measure.

Do not “correct” an official record merely because a simple database search produces another ratio. First test whether the two calculations measure the same thing.
