Freight analytics is the governed analysis of shipment, route, carrier, rate, tender, milestone, invoice, claims, capacity, and emissions data to explain transportation cost, service, utilization, risk, and change.

Choose a stable grain for each table. A shipment fact, invoice-line fact, and milestone-event fact should not be flattened and summed blindly. Use bridge tables for many-to-many relationships, such as one invoice covering multiple shipments or one consolidated load serving multiple orders.

Freight cost may include linehaul, fuel surcharge, accessorials, brokerage, duties, taxes, insurance, handling, credits, and accrual adjustments. There is no safe universal numerator: publish a cost bridge from base transportation to the reported total. Compare normalized metrics only within compatible mode, service, equipment, geography, density, and time scopes.

Cost per shipment is intuitive but can worsen when small orders proliferate. Cost per mile supports road-lane and fleet views. Cost per ton-mile normalizes both payload and distance and aligns with freight activity concepts used in the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics Freight Analysis Framework, but it depends on credible payload and mileage.

Group detention, demurrage, storage, redelivery, reclassification, residential, liftgate, address correction, peak, and other charges under governed categories while preserving the original invoice code. Analyze frequency, amount, cost per affected shipment, facility, lane, carrier, customer, reason, and dispute outcome.

A high charge is not automatically an error. It may be contractually valid yet operationally preventable, or incorrectly billed but immaterial. Keep audit validity, preventability, controllability, owner, recovery status, and root cause as separate fields.

State the promised milestone, appointment source, timezone, grace window, early-delivery rule, customer-requested change, cancellation treatment, proof-of-delivery requirement, and missing-event policy. Pickup, port gate-in, vessel departure, final delivery, and proof capture are different events.

Use distributions, not averages alone. Median transit shows the typical case; the 90th or 95th percentile shows tail exposure. That public-system measure is not interchangeable with a shipper's contract service KPI, but the percentile logic illustrates why variability matters.

A trailer can weigh out before it cubes out, or cube out while remaining light. Pallet positions, stacking, temperature zones, hazardous-material separation, axle limits, delivery sequence, and equipment availability can make theoretical capacity unusable. Preserve both physical measures and the operational constraint that bound the load.

Improving utilization is a scenario question, not a guaranteed saving. Consolidation may extend order dwell, miss cutoff times, increase handling, or require a different service. Compare the candidate scenario with a frozen baseline and retain rejected constraints.

Results are $185 per shipment, $0.74 per mile, $0.2313 per ton-mile, 12% accessorial rate, and 92% on-time delivery.

Do not benchmark air against ocean, parcel against truckload, or urban final mile against long-haul linehaul without adjustment. Use like-for-like cohorts, show cohort size, and flag thin groups where one shipment dominates the result.

Normalize before ranking: a carrier handling difficult lanes or urgent freight may appear worse than one receiving easy demand.

Keep scorecard design and freight analytics connected but distinct. The analysis investigates evidence and drivers; a governed supplier or carrier scorecard sets agreed measures, weights, thresholds, review cadence, ownership, and improvement actions.
