## What this file is

A downloadable record of answering a monthly late-shipment question with a sentence-only rationale, then opening the task trail that still held the failed join, the repaired key, and the rerun file. It is **not** a named-logo customer case, a vendor bake-off, or a GitLab / Stripe / Stanford / McKinsey experiment.

## Four-step method (reproducible)

1. Bind a monthly operations-adjacent goal on a read-only orders source plus a carrier extract and a one-page definition note locking “late” as `promised_at`. Sanitize first.
2. Request a Markdown memo, two charts, and an intermediate late-row table by warehouse.
3. Accept the first fluent paragraph as the control. Score three checks: failed join visible, repair restated, rerun file present.
4. Open the finished task trail and score the same three checks. Keep first and second artifacts side by side.

## Source and goal

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Sources | One orders table plus a carrier extract, about 7,240 shipment lines across two complete months, plus a one-page definition note locking “late” |
| Standing goal | Why did late shipments rise last month versus the prior month |
| Contrast | Sentence-only rationale vs plan → repair → rerun trail |

## Results

| Retrieval state | Failed join visible | Repair restated | Rerun file present |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentence-only rationale | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Plan → repair → rerun trail | 1 | 1 | 1 |

Late rows on this run: 1,810 (prior month) vs 1,940 (later month). The first statement failed on a null key for one warehouse. The repair switched the join to `warehouse_id + ship_date` and restated the plan. The reviewer accepted the second artifact because the repair was visible.

Wall-clock for the successful trail: 11 minutes (warehouse time excluded). The clock started when the operator opened the standing goal and ended when the failed statement, the repaired join, and the rerun file sat in one folder.

## What you may cite
